How far will you go?
New Tumblr Policy

dreamdecay:

I feel like this new policy (although it is a great idea to help restrict the advocation of self-harm with mutilation and eating disorders) this new policy will slightly discriminates against people with mental disorders, genetic tendencies and other trauma related issues.

It will stop the people who have blogs and their advocation for self-harm, eating disorders but they might as well ban “alcohol, meth, cocaine, heroin, etc” because in a way, that can be self-harm too. They are all unhealthy ways of living.

And most of you are saying “well, some people are genetically prone towards addiction with alcohol, etc”

So are eating disorders, self-mutilation, mental disorders, and so on. People who have PTSD, BPD, major depression, GAD, OCD, and other mental disorders also have a genetic component that is common amongst family members. People are genetically prone to be suicidal, have mania and depression lows, and even people with BPD have numerous family members who self-harm, and it is a genetic and runs through the family. And as many of you don’t know, eating disorders have an evolutionary explanation that should be read upon. Anorexia/bulimia is not just a trend. It is a mental disorder, a terrifying cycle, and evolutionary response and I feel like Tumblr is shaming those who don’t know how to seek help, even though some eating disorders cannot be cured.

I just don’t think it’s fair to single out those who self-harm, starve themselves, purge, and who have the courage to express themselves. Just my opinion, take it or leave it. I feel Tumblr is only repressing the typical signs of self-harm that are visible. If they really wanted to really advocate that self-harm is unnecessary, they should post hotline numbers and signs of self-harm(addiction, abusive relationship cycles, reckless driving [which is a sign of self-harm also], working yourself with labor/working out to a point to feel pain, and promiscuous sex, excessive gambling, risky business endeavors, burning, etc) that are unhealthy. They shouldn’t signalize only two of the public signs of self-harm when there are so many other forms of self-harm that need to be addressed all together instead of restricting just one on a major blogging site.

I’m not supporting people that believe self-harm is necessary. I agree that they should restrict tags, and ban blogs that support self-harm and eating disorders. But I do believe that all forms of self-harm should be addressed, and not only just two.

Nicki I agree with you for the most part, addiction is the same in all areas. But Tumblr is not trying to stop people who post cuts to express their recovery, or talk about their struggle with anorexia. It is meant for people who use their blog to push others to do something that harms them. This may be an invasion of constitutional rights, but I do believe their intention is good. I have seen several blogs that teach people how to cut, that show them different ways of purging, etc. These are the problem areas that need to be addressed. These are the blogs that are dangerous to the general public.
